COMMON QUESTIONS
Questions about ADHD medication management in Indianapolis
What does untreated ADHD look like?
Untreated adult ADHD can look like chronic disorganization, missed deadlines, unfinished tasks, impulsive decisions, restlessness, and recurring problems at work or in relationships. Because other conditions can cause similar difficulties, symptoms should be assessed before medication is prescribed.
Do I need a psychiatrist for ADHD medication in Indianapolis?
Not always. Psychiatrists and psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners with appropriate prescribing authority can manage ADHD medication. At Sommer Psychology Group, medication management is provided by Jen Brookens, PMHNP-BC, under the clinical supervision of psychiatrist Dr. Elijah Wilder, DO. Formal testing and college accommodation documentation are handled through the separate ADHD testing service.
Can ADHD be managed without medication?
Yes. Some adults manage ADHD symptoms with ADHD therapy, structured routines, behavioral strategies, and workplace or school accommodations. Others benefit from combining these approaches with medication. The appropriate plan depends on your symptoms and level of impairment.
What is the most successful ADHD medication?
There isn’t one ADHD medication that works best for everyone. Stimulant and nonstimulant options are available, and the appropriate choice depends on your symptoms, health history, other medications, possible side effects, treatment response, and safety considerations.
Do ADHD medications quiet your mind?
Some adults describe less distractibility or mental noise, but responses vary. The goal is better attention, impulse control, and daily functioning without feeling numb or unlike yourself. Discuss unwanted emotional or physical effects with your prescriber.
Can you drink coffee while taking ADHD medication?
Possibly, but discuss caffeine with your prescriber. Caffeine can contribute to jitteriness, nervousness, or sleep problems, while stimulant medications may also affect sleep, heart rate, and blood pressure. Your prescriber can help you decide what’s reasonable for you. Caffeine shouldn’t replace prescribed ADHD treatment.
How can you manage ADHD while waiting for medication?
While you’re waiting, use a consistent schedule, written reminders, timers, smaller task steps, reduced distractions, regular movement, and adequate sleep. If a prescribed medication isn’t available, contact your prescriber or pharmacist instead of changing your dose, borrowing medication, or using an unapproved substitute.
