Methods We Use in Individual Therapy
At Sommer Psychology Group, our individual therapy is tailored to your unique needs and challenges. We combine practical strategies, emotional support, and personalized guidance to help you achieve meaningful and lasting growth in your life.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a leading treatment for anxiety, OCD, and mood challenges, helping you identify and change unhelpful thought patterns and behaviors in manageable, supportive steps. We guide you to understand the connection between your thoughts, feelings, and actions, while building practical skills for coping, problem-solving, and emotional regulation. Exposure-based CBT, in particular, is highly effective for conditions like OCD, panic disorder, and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). The American Psychological Association endorses CBT—especially exposure-based approaches—as a first-line treatment for OCD and anxiety-related disorders.
Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) for OCD
Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) is a highly effective, research-supported form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), most commonly used to treat anxiety disorders like OCD. In ERP, you gradually face the thoughts, situations, or triggers that cause anxiety, while choosing not to engage in the usual responses, like avoidance, checking, or seeking reassurance. By staying present with discomfort in a safe and supportive environment, your brain learns that the anxiety will pass on its own. Over time, this helps reduce fear, build confidence in handling difficult feelings, and restore a sense of control. ERP empowers you to move beyond anxiety and reconnect with the things that matter most in your life.
Inference-Based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (I-CBT)
Inference-Based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (ICBT) is an evidence-based treatment for OCD that focuses on helping individuals understand and disengage from obsessional doubt and fear-based reasoning processes. Rather than focusing only on symptoms or behaviors, ICBT helps clients recognize how the mind moves away from reality and into imagined possibilities that fuel obsessions, anxiety, and compulsive behaviors.
Through ICBT, clients learn to identify obsessional reasoning patterns, reconnect with direct sensory information and reality-based thinking, and reduce compulsions, reassurance-seeking, avoidance, and mental rituals. ICBT can be especially effective for OCD themes involving doubt, contamination fears, harm OCD, relationship OCD, moral or religious OCD, and “what if” thinking patterns.
Research supports ICBT as an effective treatment for OCD, helping individuals build greater trust in themselves and respond differently to intrusive thoughts and uncertainty without relying on compulsive behaviors.
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
ACT helps individuals respond to their thoughts and emotions with greater flexibility and less struggle by teaching them to make space for uncomfortable feelings instead of trying to eliminate them. Through mindfulness and experiential exercises, you’ll learn to break free from anxious or perfectionistic thinking, accept uncertainty without panic, and take meaningful actions that align with your values, moving toward a life that feels authentic and fulfilling.
Habit Reversal Training (HRT) & Comprehensive Behavioral (ComB) Treatment for Body Focused Repetitive Behaviors
HRT and ComB treatment are two effective behavioral approaches for managing Body-Focused Repetitive Behaviors (BFRBs), such as hair pulling (trichotillomania) and skin picking (excoriation). HRT focuses on increasing awareness of the behavior and teaching competing responses—alternative actions that are physically incompatible with the BFRB. The ComB model expands on this by identifying and addressing five domains that maintain the behavior: sensory, cognitive, affective, motor, and environmental factors. By targeting the individual’s specific triggers and reinforcing factors, ComB allows for a more personalized and flexible treatment strategy. Both methods are evidence-based and often used in combination for greater effectiveness.
Exposure Therapy for Anxiety
Exposure Therapy is a highly effective, research-supported form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) used to treat anxiety and trauma-related distress. In Exposure Therapy, you gradually face the thoughts, memories, or situations that trigger fear or discomfort, in a safe and controlled environment. By staying present with these experiences rather than avoiding them, your brain learns that the distress will lessen over time. This process helps reduce fear, build confidence in managing difficult emotions, and restore a sense of control. Exposure Therapy empowers you to move beyond anxiety and trauma, reclaiming your life and reconnecting with what matters most.”
